Wonderful resource for student actors
Roger Ellis has gathered a collection of new and challenging monologues for young actors. High school and college students will find these monologues particularly useful for competition and audition purposes. This volume would make an excellent addition to any student actors collection.

Many scripts and scenes are for women and minority actors, outlining social issues and insights which will reach a wide age range from 10 to into one's twenties. Recommended for schools with strong drama departments.

Great Big Smashing Hit!
This is an outstanding book of monologs for actors of all ages! You want to get that choice part? Use the pieces from this book to land it with ease. Never before has such a great selection been put together. Pay particular attention to FISHING THE MOON by Scott McMorrow, A GENIUS by Dori Appel, and MEMORY GLAND by Lynne Elson.

The Booklover's Repair Kit: First Aid for Home Libraries
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (October, 2000)
Authors: Estelle Ellis, Wilton Wiggins, and Douglas Lee
Average review score:

First Impression
Just received the kit. It is much more beautiful than I expected, with a neat box (including almost secret drawer), nice tools, more supplies than I expected and a very well designed and written book.

I don't know if I will ever actually get around to repairing my books, but this kit is worth the price just for the beautiful organization. It even smells nice.

PS, I always have buyers remorse, so I am surprised how much I like this.

Wow! I was looking for just this kit!
I got an issue of a German women's magazine Freundin and theyfeatured this Booklover's Repair Kit. I'd been looking all over for a proper set of materials to repair some old bindings. This is simply brilliant.

It would take me many trips or orders by mail, phone or internet to assemble all these necessary items. Not only is everything you need in this kit, but you can also use it to make your own bookbindings (you need some kind of press, but that can be a piece of wood and some clamps, and a bone folder which can be found in craft stores that carry scrapbooking items.) If you like to scrapbook or do your own journal OR if you collect old books, this kit is a must.

Scarlett O'Hara['s book] was not beautiful...
At last someone has grasped the depth of personal sentiment attached not merely to content but to the medium, the books themselves, those volumes with their loose covers, cracked bindings and torn pages. Thank you, Ms. Ellis and Messrs. Wiggins and Lee.

As I have watched my niece graduate from Ramona and Harry Potter to Judy Blume, I have wondered how I could give her my adored but crumbling copy of Gone With The Wind, worrying about her rejecting it for its evident decay, or worse, the book's ability to withstand another reading. Now a talented trio has put together a kit which will allow butterfingered me to repair the novel before passing it on. The Booklover's Repair Kit doesn't just tell me how to do it, in straightforward terms with helpful diagrams. Much more in fact, since everything I may need to fix the book comes with it.

If you give a damn about the books on your shelf, you will want the Booklover's Repair Kit to join them with its handsome packaging and enough supplies to fix a dozen or so tattered books, be they Proust or Mitchell.

Cheyenne Dog Soldiers: A Courageous Warrior History

Hard to come by, but if you can get a hold of it-do!
If you are at all interested in the Plains Indians, Native American Art, or the history of the Cheyenne, do everything you can to get a hold of this CD, which takes you on a tour of an exhibit at the Denver Historical Society Museum. The center piece is the legder art of the this fiece warrior society, but many other artistic and historical items are also included.

I have read extensively on this subject, and visited any number of museums, yet I still learned a lot from the text and the narration. In addition you can click on any of the items in the virtual tour and get a detailed description along with a history-and there are many, many items. There is also a separate section on the ledger art which is clearly displayed a beautiful.

Kids will love going through the virtual exhibit, though I found clicking the next button, and viewing items one by one more helpful. There is also a special kids section, so the entire family can enjoy it.

This is well worth the price!

I have never seen anything so detailed!
This CD is unlike anything I've ever seen. Especially in history and art subjects. It even translates all 100 or so works of ledger art and speaks it out loud in Cheyenne! By a real person!

Amazing depth yet usable by my children.
The Virtual walk through of the History museum gives you the feeling of having visited the exhibit.

Every single drawing is detailed with indian and soldier accounts of the drawings; subject, date, etc.

Schools should require this kind of history lesson.

Traveler's Companion Cuba
A Letter That I Wrote to The Traveler's Companion Publishers......

Dear Reader

Hi my name is Brian Cliette; I'm a Hospitality and Tourism major at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. Firstly I would like to express my love and admiration for your Traveler's Companion books, personally I own close to Fifthteen of them. During High school and College my interest sparked by your books has allowed me to travel to many parts of the world. Never the less yours books have led me to the best sites, restaurants, night clubs and places of interest that these countries had to offer. In less than a month on July 19th, I will embark on yet another adventure abroad, to the land of Castro, great rum, cigars, the land of a beautiful people and unique culture. "Cuba" . But because funding (educational cuts in North Carolina) my school wont be able to furnish the Traveler's Cuba Companion for my fellow students. Which I feel with really enhance their travel abroad experience. So I was wondering if they're any charitable books available for educational endeavors such as this. Doing so would spark interest in your other great products. Any help that u may be able to offer would so greatly be appreciated. And if unable to furnish books or other learning tools that would aid are experience, your books are still great.

Sincerely,

Brian A. Cliette

Good book of Cuba
There arent too many good travel books on Cuba. I liked this book and found the information to be accurate and insightful. I definately would take it with you if you are planning a trip to Havana. Its probabaly the best one out there and I have read them all. Best

Deckscaping: Gardening and Landscaping on and Around Your Deck

how to create a welcoming haven!
Gardening and Landscaping On and Around Your Deck. How to surround your deck with spring flowers & fall berries, & fill it with flowers that will attract birds & butterflies, as well as create an edible landscape for yourself.

Time to turn your deck into a place worth living in? Want to add a little Eden into your life?

Barbara Ellis has the book for you!

With gorgeous photographs & elegant drawings; lists of flowers that will attract wildlife; comparisons of different kinds of containers & trellises, & simple instructions on how to do almost anything with plants, DECKSCAPING is a must for anyone wanting to change that drab outdoor area into a welcoming haven for yourself & your wild life!

Deckscaping: Gardening and Landscaping on and Around your De
This book is an excellent addition to my collection of gardening books. The author did a great job of outlining projects and listing the plants used in the projects. The pictures are a great guide to anyone desiring to either duplicate her projects or simply get ideas. Since I work fulltime and have only the weekend to indulge my love of gardening, I look for ideas in books and gardening magazines--this book is a great source. With the current focus on extending our living space to the outdors, I like to maximize what little spare time I have by utilizing the results of someone else's vision and labor. I hope they don't mind.

THOROUGHLY INTRIGUING
This book thoroughly intriqued me because often when we think of decks, we think of some elaborate, expensive project. In this case building a deck can mean little more than building a simple platform and from there, expanding on your idea to whatever extent one chooses. How far one goes with design will likely depend to a certain degree on space, lifestyle and financial resources. There are some great ideas here for furniture, planters, etc. and the photography is quite appealing. Wondering what to plant around your deck and where? This book offers some really great suggestions. Now, if I could just find my existing deck under all this snow....

Feeling Better, Getting Better, Staying Better : Profound Self-Help Therapy For Your Emotions
Published in Paperback by Impact Publishers, Inc. (June, 2001)
Author: Albert Ellis
Average review score:

Listen to the Old Fox
In this book, Al Ellis tells you everything you need to achieve long-term freedom from emotional upset. He explains why certain modes of therapy are ineffective and counter-productive. Even if they do no harm, they do not deliver the help you need, as opposed to more efficacious modes of therapy, such as REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy) and Cognitive Therapy. He distinguishes between merely palliative techniques, like Yoga and Meditation, which help you feel better, but do not lead to lasting improvement, and those which help you get better and stay better.

Ellis makes no bones about the fact that it is often difficult to achieve the changes you want to make - but that's no reason for not doing so!

Having tried other therapeutic methods, until I discovered Dr. Ellis at one of his legendary Friday night workshops, I can tell you that if you stick to the principles laid out in this book, you will be the better for it.

Principles of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy
In this book, Ellis shows the interested reader how Rational Emotive Therapy works, what the underlying philosphy is, and - most importantly - what you can do to get yourself out of emotional difficulties.
He emphasizes not only the aspect of feeling better, which many clients can more or less easily do (e.g. by exercising, meditating or distracting oneself from difficult feelings and situations). It is much more important to actually get better and permanently stay better. Ellis shows how you can achieve the kind of deep restructruring of your basic philosphies of life. He specifically recommends the use of the following techniques:
- Logical Disputing, e.g.: does it really follow that I am a worm if I am acting wormily?
- Realistic Disputing: Where is the evicence for my absolutist belief?
- Pragmatic Disputing: making cost-benefit ratios of short and long term benefits of my behavior and thinking patterns

To effectively dispute your irrational beliefs, you better dispute them cognitively, emotionally and behaviorally.
What I as a psychologist especially liked about this new book, are Ellis' exemplary disputations of low frustration tolerance, self-downing and other downing. This can help clients considerably to apply the ideas to their real life problems.
A good book to use for bibliotherapy!

A recommended supplement to a professional care
Feeling Better, Getting Better, Staying Better: Profound Self-Help Therapy For Your Emotions is a psychological self-help book with a wealth of advice on how to improve one's physical health by harnessing the power of one's emotional state. Chapters discuss such practical methods for improving one's attitude and therefore health such as thinking, philosophizing, emoting, and engaging in positive activities. A highly recommended addition to any personal self-help reading list, Feeling Better, Getting Better, Staying Better is not a substitute for seeing a therapist or counselor, but rather a recommended supplement to a professional care in order to help the reader respond more effectively to treatment.

Just Enough Turkish
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (30 September, 1990)
Authors: D. L. Ellis, Roderick Conway Morris, and Passport Books
Average review score:

So Far My Favorite Phrase Book...
...if you are going to Turkey, and you're only going to get one book about the language, this is the one I'd recommend.

My oldest son is marrying a Turkish girl in Istanbul, and while we're all going to join them there for the wedding, I'm trying to learn enough of the language to be able to talk a little, and understand a bit. My second son just wants to get by, my third son is somewhere in between. We are all using this book!

For me, it has been a starter book (though In Flight Turkish was my first and best, since it had a CD to help me comprehend the spoken word). For my two younger sons, it has been a way to learn the essentials for it seems if you are going to another country, you should be able to say some basic things in the language of the country. Each of them has their own, to stick in a pocket or backpack and carry around, stateside and in Turkey.

This book is small (maybe 1/2 inch thick, 6" x 4" in size (or so) and structured in a way even a (brilliant) ten year old finds easy.

A great beginner's book, a getting by book, a getting around book.

A must-have book for any beginner!
I have this book, and it's the best purchase I ever made! It's very simple and direct in its format, and has a really excellent explanation of how to pronounce the words and letters. In fact, of all the Turkish language books I've tried out, this one explains the pronounciation the best.
It focuses on only what is needed to know, if you plan to visit Turkey. If you need a book that will get you started, but don't want something that makes the language more in-depth than you need for your preliminary study -- this is the book to have! Plus, it's really small, so you'll be able to carry it with you in your purse or backpack or briefcase with ease.

Perfect "Emergency" Phrase Book
My husband (who is Turkish) and I agree that this is the perfect little phrase book to use when I get stuck trying to remember just the right question. With this little book I will be able to ride the bus, go to market, and do other everyday tasks when we move to Turkey in a few monthes without having to carry around several dictionaries all the time. Not only does it have a very easy to use layout and many vocabulary words, but it also has many questions and (most importantly!) several common answers. A really great book for anyone traveling to Turkey!

The Volunteer Recruitment (And Membership Development) Book
Published in Paperback by Energize Books (01 January, 2002)
Author: Susan J. Ellis
Average review score:

Somewhat Dated, Some Nuggets

This book (acutally an 8.5 by 11 manual), originally published in 1994 and based on 1980's readings, is somewhat dated and has been only marginally updated. It falls into the second rank of the four books that made the cut from among the many available. Helen Little's "Volunteers: How to Get Them, How to Keep Them" stands alone as the single "must buy." This book is co-equal to two others, each recommended as supplementary reading because each has something to offer at a secondary level: Sue Vineyard and Steve McCurley's "Best Practices for Volunteer Programs" and Jarene Frances Lee with Julai M. Catagnus, "Supervising Volunteers: An Action Guide for Making Your Job Easier."

There are two aspects of this manual by Susan Ellis that I did not see in the other books: first, her emphasis on casting a wide net and reaching as many potential volunteers as possible....("Most people do not say 'no'; they simply never knew you wanted them to say 'yes'.) While I am skeptical of wasteful advertising programs in this time of diminishing leisure hours, there is something to this. The other vital chapter that this manual offers is the one addressing the importance of image, i.e. the public perception of the organization seeking volunteers, the reputation that it can specifically draw on as a resource.

There are a few flakey notes (e.g. one vignette about recruiting people to call parents and offer support as they are getting kids out the door to school. Any normal parent, especially if one parent is absent or has an early work start, would be furious at any volunteer daring to call in the midst of the chaos that charactizes getting three kids out the door to three different bus pick-up times.)

This manual does have an index. Bottom line: dated, some nuggets, if volunteers are vital to your success, worth getting.

Invite, don't plead!
The Volunteer Recruitment (And Membership Development) Book by volunteer recruitment expert Susan Ellis is a straightforward and practical guide to successfully finding and recruiting volunteers for non-profit organizations and other causes and movements. Chapters cover recruitment techniques (invite, don't plead!), appealing to target audiences, where to look for volunteers and much more. The Volunteer Recruitment Book is an absolutely useful "must-read" for anyone charged with the responsibility of finding -- and keeping -- new volunteers!

Good advice for volunteer and membership recruitment
Ms. Ellis's book provides a lot of good advice. As the current president of a volunteer run professional organization, I started reading her book looking for ways to recruit more people to serve on our board or in our volunteer role and run the nominations process more effectively. I ended up with ideas about that, but also possibly more importantly it prompted me to spend a lot of time thinking about how our group presents itself to the public, to it's members, and what we do. In other words, it prompted me to think about our group on more strategic levels.

Ms. Ellis strategy is to have you think about what you want to acocmplish before soliciting volunteers, and also to think about how your group can push it's boundaries and think creatively about who it's members are, who it's constituents are, and untapped resources for volunteers. I mention members a lot, because a lot of what she says could transfer to either kinds of recruitment, depending on your need.

A lot of the volunteer information is a little more oriented towards groups that need or could use lot of volunteers (say a social services group, or hospital). But a small group like ours which is all volunteer run, can also benefit from this book.

This is one of the best books I have read ever. The story revoles around a girl named Jody who goes on a sking trip with five other people and she sprains her ankle while sking one day and has to spend the rest of the trip in bed, and as there is nothing to do on her own while the others go out and have fun she starts look out the window in her room and she can she in to the cabin next door and one night when she is watching the other cabin she notices two pelpole having a fight but it is to far to see clearly so she does not pay much atention but the next night she see somthing even horrible, a murder and now she remembers how all the other people she was staying with did not like the person staying in the cabin next door. She is all alone she can not trust anyone and is the killer coming after her next.

Awsome!
The window was one of the best books I ever read I loved it. It kept you gussing through the whole book.

GREAT MURDER MYSTERY
This is a good book with a smart plot and exciting characters. A group of teens are staying at a ski resort for the week. One of the girls sprains her ankle and is forced to stay in her room while the others ski. She is bored out of her mind and all she can do is look out the window. She starts to really notice a room across from her window and unknowingly witnesses a fight and possibly a murder. The plot moves quickly and the author really keeps you guessing as to who the murderer is.
